Opposition in astrology: 180 degrees, signs and real examples

An opposition is an aspect close to 180°, measured along the shortest distance between two zodiac positions. In symbolic interpretation, astrologers often explore contrast, projection or negotiation between the planets involved. This does not establish hostility or attraction. In a natal chart the planets belong to one person; synastry compares two people; a transit compares a moving sky position with a natal one. Keep those contexts separate.

An invented Venus at 18° Libra is at 198° longitude; Mars at 20° Aries is at 20°. Their shortest separation is 178°, so the opposition has a 2° orb. But 1° Aries and 29° Libra are only 152° apart by the shortest path, 28° from exact. Both pairs occupy opposite signs, yet they are not equally close aspects. Check actual degrees and the chosen orb.

For Venus opposite Mars in synastry, ask whether affection and initiative actually differ in pace. One person might prefer advance invitations, another spontaneous plans. Try an agreement and observe its effect. The angle cannot establish consent, sexual compatibility or a prediction of separation. If birth data are uncertain, mark which degrees, houses and angles could change. Compare with other contacts rather than counting oppositions as automatic failures.
